European Council Decision (EU) 2022/492 electing the President of the European Council

Summary:

Decision (EU) 2022/492 - adopted by the European Council on 24 March 2022 - renewing the mandate of Charles Michel as President of the European Council.

The President chairs European Council meetings and drives forward its work. He also ensures the external representation of the EU at his level on issues concerning its common foreign and security policy.

Charles Michel was elected as President of the European Council in July 2019, for a mandate lasting between December 2019 and May 2022. In accordance with the Treaty on the European Union (TEU), the holder of the office may be re-elected once.

Mr Michel was reelected for a second mandate on 24 March 2022 at a European Council summit. This mandate lasts between June 2022 and November 2024.
