European dimensions of the marine environment

This briefing highlights the European policy dimension of the marine and maritime environment in order to provide background to the forthcoming Scottish Marine Bill. Two key aspects of European policy are discussed: The Integrated Maritime Policy for the European Union and The EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The ecosystem-based approach which is a key feature of EU marine and fisheries policy is also highlighted. The implications of these policies for Scotland are set out. The briefing concludes by outlining some other EU policies which impact on the marine environment in Scotland.
