Since the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) covers sea fisheries and aquaculture as well as processing and marketing of fisheries products, all ten countries joining the European Union on 1st May 2004 have an interest in this policy. This note shows the positive contribution that the CFP will make to the fisheries and aquaculture sector of the new Member States. It looks first at why we need a CFP, then it provides a brief description of the CFP's main tasks before looking at the type of policy that has been taking shape since the December 2002 reform and the benefits that it will bring the new Member States. There are also a series of factsheets providing information on fisheries and aquaculture in each of the ten countries joining the EU on I May 2004.
