Just as the OSCE observers were freed on 3 May 2014 after 8 days of captivity, the Robert Schuman Foundation published a European Interview with Maxime Lefebvre, Ambassador for France with the OSCE. Reviewing the situation in the Russo-Ukrainian crisis he explained that 'everything indicates that the 'uprising' in Crimea, then the Russian-speaking region in the east in April 2014 was the work of a well organised activist minority supported by external forces'.
