The International Criminal Court came into being on 1 July 2002. It will be the first world court for trying individuals accused of committing genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. The United States was the only member of the United Nations Security Council to oppose the new institution. Washington fears that US politicians and soldiers could become ensnared in investigations launched by the Court's prosecutor. The US has threatened to withdraw its personnel from all peacekeeping operations unless peacekeepers are given immunity from the Court.
