The European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH) initiative was begun in 1999 to implement a European network that would help to support the establishment of industrial heritage as kind of a tourism brand.

ERIH has become the largest information network for tourists interested in the industrial heritage of Europe. It is a registered association under German law with a permanently growing number of members, established after the end of INTERREG funding in 2008. While the ERIH website counted roughly 650 attractive industrial heritage sites at the end of the funded set-up phase it now includes more than 1,600 sites in 47 (of 51) European countries.
