European Union (EU): Security, Conflict and Migration

This chapter discusses EU security and conflict resolution measures. The idea to maintain peace and security in the European continent was the trigger to start integrating European countries under one umbrella. In the European integration process, the security issues have taken a secondary place after the economic integration. Recent developments in the world and the massive movements of persons towards Europe have made EU countries revaluate their approach to migration and security. Terrorist attacks and massive flow of irregular migrants on the shores of Europe has made the European Union set up more instruments to tackle these issues at the European level. Security and migration management is not seen any longer as a sovereign issue of each member state. The chapter provides a short analysis of EU migration policy and legislation in the context of security. Also, the author discusses the role of the European Court of Justice in the issues of security and how the cases have been handled in the situation where the court does not have full competence. Finally, the problematics of internal and external security policy are discussed in the context of security.
