Abstract:

This book aims to illuminate EU law for the student approaching the subject for the first time - who at best might find the subject opaque and at worst deeply mystifying. Previously published as Blackstone's Study Pack on European Union Law, this edition has been fully updated to include all major developments, up to and including the Treaty of Nice.

The work begins with the background to EU law - the history of the EU and the institutional framework and sources of law it can produce. There then follows an examination of the EU's legal system, providing analysis of ways in which EU law might be utilised in actions before domestic courts, and those actions which may be brought against the EU for illegal conduct.

Major areas of substantive law such as freedom of movement, competition law and equal treatment take up the remainder of the book, which features basic concepts with full cross references to the Cases and Materials on the companion web site (www.oup.com/uk/booksites/law/eu). Test questions and exercises are included throughout the book together with extended sample questions at the end of each chapter.

The book will interest both undergraduates and graduate students who have no previous experience of EU law.

Elspeth Deards is Senior Lecturer in Law, and Sylvia Hargreaves is Principal Lecturer in Law, at Nottingham Law School, Nottingham Trent University.
