Book abstract:

Some commentators would suggest that the US and the European Union represent the superpowers of the world trading system. Co-operation and joint leadership between the two partners has given birth to GATT (General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade) and more recently the WTO (World Trade Organisation) both of which have been great liberalising influences on world trade. Will this mutually beneficial relationship continue to prosper as the mood and political climate in Washington and Brussels seem set to change? Europe may becoming more robust in its resistance to US export tax credits and agricultural support is an area of intensive debate between the two sides.

This study addresses these and many other aspects of the relationship. It is organised in four parts. Part one gives historical background to the trade tensions between the US and EU over the past several years. The trade conflicts and their underlying causes are categorised and evaluated in part two. The third part looks to the future and examines the potential for further trade conflict. Part four assesses the role that trade disputes might play in the US- EU economic relationship.

The work will interest students, scholars policy researchers and economists engaged in the field of EU/US trade.
