Summary: The European Commission designated 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage. It aims to encourage more people to discover and engage with Europe's cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European space. The slogan for the year is: Our heritage: where the past meets the future. Further information: The November 2014 Council conclusions on participatory governance of cultural heritage called on the Commission to establish a European Year of Cultural Heritage (EYCH). A proposal for a European Year of Cultural Heritage in 2018 was put forward by the European Commission in August 2016. The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union reached a compromise agreement on the framework of EYCH in February 2017, followed by its financial provisions in May. The final act was signed on 17 May and published in the Official Journal on 20 May. |
