Although the EU has adopted three packages of directives that require member states to break down former monopolies and implement freedom of choice for all the consumers, the results from the effort to open and integrate electricity markets are far from optimal. While global warming is a serious threat, awarding generous subsidies to renewable technologies is not only costly, it undermines competition and therefore liberalisation in the market.
