Book abstract:

The collapse of the former Soviet bloc and the subsequent independence of the former Communist states represents a real challenge to the EU. Understandably it has reached out to its near neighbours and the next phase of expansion will change dramatically the political map of Europe. So it is perhaps timely to publish this collection of papers which comment on such diverse topics as population movements, defence and security, the future of the Balkans, the role of the UN, religion and conflict, the prospects for democracy, relations with the developing world and globalisation.
The articles are prefaced by a contribution from Chris Patten, EU Commissioner for External Affairs and concluded by a statement from Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The book will interest students and scholars of European Studies and International Relations.
