The Council of the European Union decided on 23 March 2020 to extend the mandate and scope of the mission to train the Malian Armed Forces (EUTM Mali).

Further information:

EUTM Mali is part of the European Union's integrated approach to security and development in the Sahel region. The mission was established in 2013, at the request of the Malian government, to respond to the need to strengthen the capabilities of the country's Armed Forces.

This mission contribute to improving the operational capacity of the Malian Armed Force through the provision of military advice, training, education and mentoring. The tasks carried out by the mission are under the control of Mali's legitimate civilian authorities and do not comprise combat operations.

Following the Council's decision, EUTM Mali is to be provide military assistance to the G5 Sahel Joint Force and to national armed forces in the G5 Sahel countries. The mission was prolonged until 18 May 2024.
