Belgian police arrested two people on the 27-28 December 2015 suspected of planning terrorist attacks in Brussels during the festive season. Raids had taken place in Brussels and the provinces of Flemish Brabant and Liege, and six people detained.

The Belga news agency reported that there was 'a possible and credible threat of Paris-type attacks' against: visitors to the tourist attraction Grand Place, the main police station adjoining the square; and against police and military personnel in general.
