...after a centre-left coalition under Romano Prodi collapsed. D'Alema, leader of the moderate Democratic Left Party, promised to push through Prodi's budget plan, including more than 8 billion ecu in public spending cuts, which is essential for Italy to continue meeting the criteria for monetary union. Italian European Commissioner Emma Bonino was approached about the possibility of a ministerial post in the new government, but confirmed yesterday (21 October) that she intended to stay in Brussels. Prodi is now being tipped as a strong candidate to succeed Commission President Jacques Santer in 2000.
