Voters sent Nicolas Sarkozy, French president, a stark warning this week after record abstentions in the first round of local elections helped the far right National Front to return its best score in a national poll on 20 March 2011.

More than 55 per cent of voters failed to cast their ballot on Sunday, leaving the way open for a motivated NF to win more than 15 per cent in the final count, up from 12 per cent in 2004 when the party fielded more candidates.
