Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler this week formally unveiled proposals for reforming the EU wine regime

The reform package essentially aims to curb overproduction while increasing the output of quality wine. The overhaul would increase expenditure on the sector to 1.2 billion ecu per year, as compared with this year's total of 806 million ecu. The unveiling of the proposal was delayed after European Commission budget officials questioned this additional expenditure.
