An agreement in February 2017 between the governing and opposition parties in the Faroe Islands set a date for a referendum on a new Constitution for the 25 April 2018.

According to the Faroese prime minister, the document aimed to define the population in terms of its national identity, its rights and duties, including the right to self-determination. The full text was scheduled to be presented later in the year.

Denmark won control over the archipelago in 1814 and it continues to govern such areas as defense, law enforcement, currency and foreign affairs while the Faroese control most domestic policy.
