Six months after the defeat of Nicolas Sarkozy in the French Presidential Election, a fierce battle to succeed him at the head of France’s mainstream conservative opposition UMP party was set to decide whether the party swung to the right or held to the centre as it confronted President François Hollande. The UMP election on the 18 November 2012 for the post of UMP party president pitted the staid François Fillon, prime minister for five years under Mr Sarkozy, against Jean-François Copé, the party’s secretary-general who advocates aggressive opposition to the government. After a close vote the latter became party president. The contested weekend vote was plagued by allegations of fraud on both sides. Former French prime minister Francois Fillon created a breakaway parliamentary group a week after losing the vote for leadership of the UMP party, confirming a partisan split in the French right. |
