European Parliament President Klaus Hänsch told the European College in Bruges yesterday (4 October). “A period of silence from certain finance ministers and certain central bank governors would be most welcome,” said Hänsch, who claims a single currency would help lift the European Union out of the economic doldrums. “Europe must start creating something new, rather than forever patching up the past.” A cease-fire in the war of words over economic and monetary union should be policed by a special European Commission force whose job it would be to nip in the bud false stories about the single currency plan, said Hänsch.
