Finland and Sweden their joint bids for NATO membership in May 2022, in response to Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine. The decision to join the alliance was a major shift for both countries due to their long-standing policies of military non-alignment. In January 2023, Turkey threatened to block Sweden’s NATO membership, while indicating its support for Finland’s accession to the alliance.
