First Progress Report of the Socio-Economic Assessment of the Danube Region: Challenges and Recommendations for cooperation towards sustainable development

Summary:

A socio-economic study has been commissioned by the coordinator of Priority Area (PA) 8, located within the Ministry of Finance and Economics Baden-Wuerttemberg. It is financed by the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission and co-financed by the Ministry.

One aim of the study is to analyse the current situation in the Danube Region with respect to prosperity, entrepreneurship/SMEs and cooperation activities to identify the obstacles which hinder the improvement of the situation.

The first progress report on the socio-economic assessment of the Danube Region presents very first results for individual topics of the prosperity and competitiveness diagnostics and describes progress of project Part I. Current results focus in particular on the comparative assessment (benchmarking) of the macroeconomic performance of the Danube Region vis-à-vis the EU-27 and OECD countries. For that purpose, novel aggregate indicators have been derived from the underlying country-specific – and in the case of Baden Wurttemberg and Bavaria – federal state-specific data sources to obtain an overall view on the Danube Region. The analysis takes into account that the Danube Region comprises a very heterogeneous set of regions with wide disparities in economic performance. The Danube Region has some of the most successful but also some of the poorest regions in the EU. Therefore, an exclusive focus on the Danube Region as a whole would hide important differences. In order to take these differences into account, we divide the Danube Region into five subgroups of countries or regions and make comparisons between these subgroups.
