In the five years since Ukraine's then president, Viktor Yanukovych, fled to Russia, the country made a lot of progress. The economy improved, steps were taken to tackle corruption, and a lively, contested politics emerged. The country was moving to integrate with the EU and distancing itself from Russia, which gave rise to renewed military tensions.
