At an informal meeting of European Union Finance Ministers in Scheveningen on 10-11 September 2004, attended by representatives from three leading European banks, Finance Ministers ordered a study to be carried out into cross-border banking mergers. The project will be headed by Charles McCreevy, European Commissioner-designate for the Internal Market - he will take up his post on 1 November 2004. |
