On 5 March 2001 the European Commission staged a high-level round table with representatives of the agri-food industry, distributors, consumers and scientists. The theme of the meeting was a rethink of food production and food policy in terms of quality, safety and cost. This initiative was also the starting point for a wide debate on the subject in Member States, the media and the European Parliament.
