Food safety chief David Byrne said on Tuesday that the European Commission is considering extra measures to combat the spread of mad cow disease and boost confidence in beef.

Speaking in the European Parliament, Byrne said proposals under consideration included lowering the age limits for animals that are tested for the disease and imposing controls on the sale of cuts including the T-bone.
