The frequent outbreaks of transmissible diseases like foot and mouth disease (FMD), classical swine fever (CSF) and avian influenza (bird flu) have caused devastating economic losses in the past years. Organised by the European Commission, a workshop on EU funded research in FMD and CSF brought together researchers, policy makers, international organisations and
stakeholders from all over the world. Relying on the results of this workshop, it is the intention of this publication to present ongoing research activities funded by the EU in the context of outbreaks of these epizootic diseases and the new EU legislation in this field. Future research needs and ways to boost international co-operation in research are also examined.
