American subsidiaries of foreign corporations paid a record amount of taxes in 1999, the last year of the US economic boom, according to a study of recently-released Internal Revenue Service data. The World Trade Organisation decided in 2002 in favour of the European Union that a US tax break for exporters - the Foreign Sales Corporation scheme - was a violation of international trade rules.
