France has firmly rejected calls by the UK and other member states for a firm date to be set for the end of accession talks with applicant countries

"The French presidency does not intend to set an artificial date for the conclusion of enlargement negotiations," said a foreign ministry spokesman, insisting that Paris' main goal during its stint at the EU's helm was to complete the negotiations on Union treaty changes by December.
