Giving evidence to the European parliament's economic and monetary affairs committee, Laurent Fabius, the French finance minister, backed away from previous suggestions that the group of 'wise men' to be appointed by European finance ministers would consider establishing a single European regulator. Instead it would consider how stock exchange rules could be harmonised.
