Book abstract:

This book argues that there are serious problems in EU (European Union) law concerning the freedom of movement of persons and matters of citizenship. Although the question of people movement used to be governed by economics and specifically the movement of labour and workers around Europe, since Maastricht in 1993 it has become involved in the broader, economically independent idea of EU integration and identity. This work offers at once a summary, a detailed insight into and an extensive analysis of the restrictions placed upon the freedom of movement within Europe, as well as providing a collection of pertinent regulations, court judgements, directives and policy statements, with space given to legal developments in the area since October 2001.

With its extremely wide scope, the book includes material as diverse and complex as the following: discrimination, job seekers, students rights of residence, retirement, rights of entry, tax, housing, social security, compensation, jurisprudence, frontier workers, benefits, citizens of third countries, political rights, and access to justice, especially treaty provisions, the right to petition to the European Parliament, complaints, action taken on complaints and the European Court of Justice.

The book is primarily aimed at practitioners working within this area.
