Spinal cord remains (believed to be one of the main means by which BSE can pass from cattle to humans) have been found in 10% of carcasses examined by AFSSA, the French food standards body. Other specific risk materials have also been found in beef in a survey of 32 abattoirs. British farmers are staggered at what they see as hypocrisy by France when it refuses to accept British beef.
