Commentators saw the contest as one of the most open of recent years with four candidates in contention to be one of the two who would advance to the second round on the 7 May 2017.

On the evening of the 20 April 2017, at the time when the third and final live tv candidate debate was taking place, a suspected terrorist-related incident took place in Paris with a policeman being shot dead and two injured in the Champs Elysées.
