The massive number of migrants arriving at the EU’s borders kept migration issues in the headlines throughout 2014. It was the year in which Frontex, border guard authorities and all of the Member States were confronted with more than 280,000 illegal border crossings, double the previous record number (in 2011, the year of the Arab Spring). The ongoing conflict in Syria, instability in Iraq connected with the rise of ISIS and the further break-down of government structures in Libya, the main departure point for migrants last year, significantly
contributed to what is considered to be the worst refugee crisis since World War Two
