Alexander Medvedev, deputy chief executive of Gazprom, the Russian natural gas monopoly, warned on the 20 November 2007 that a European Commission proposal that would limit the group’s access to European transmission networks would inevitably lead to a surge in prices.

In his first substantial public comments on a Commission proposal that would prevent Gazprom and other non-EU companies owning controlling stakes in European energy networks, Mr Medvedev said he planned to warn his counterparts in the EU of the potentially negative consequences of the move.
