Germany’s powerful constitutional court rejected the country’s federal election law as unconstitutional on the 25 July 2012, in the latest of a series of legal upsets for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s centre-right coalition government from the highest court in the land.

The new election law of 2011 was found illegal by the Constitutional Court. It said that the law will have to be changed before the next election in 2013.
