Reports of an Education Summit convened by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Dresden, 22 October 2008 to discuss challenges facing the German education system. The event was conceived as a show-piece political event. It concluded with a pledge to increase annual government spending on education by tens of billions of euros by 2015. However tensions between regional and federal authorities over responsibilities for education policy weakened the effectiveness of the summit.
