Book abstract:

The third edition of this book provides an updated introduction into the complexities of German law. It also permits space for significant recent changes in the law of obligations in the civil code, public law and sources of law.

Broadly, the book is composed of two parts. The first, 'Introduction to the German Legal System', consists of five specific areas. These are, respectively, German legal history and development, sources of German law, legal institutions, legal education and legal personnel, and the operation of justice. Part two deals with 'Substantive German Law'. The authors break this field down into discussions of four public laws: (1) Constitutional law: Principles and institutions; (II) Basic Rights and the Federal Constitutional Court; (III) General Administrative Law; (IV) Criminal Law. They then explore two private laws: (I) The German Civil Code, and (II) Business and Labour Law. The authors have compiled a more detailed contents page to supplement this general framework. They also offer an extensive glossary and up-to-date extracts from the Grundgesetz.

The book is aimed at both professionals and students working on the German legal system.
