Germany and Russia were set to reinforce their growing economic and trade ties in July 2011 at top-level government talks hosted by Angela Merkel, even as the German chancellor’s camp rebuffed claims she was putting a higher priority on the relationship with Russia than the eurozone crisis.

The meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s president, and a string of government ministers on both sides, follows the announcement on the 14 July 2011 of a potential tie-up between Gazprom, the Russian state energy monopoly, and RWE, one of Germany’s leading power companies.
