Germany blocks MEP pay rises

Germany and a number of other EU Member States have blocked the text of the draft Statute for MEPs agreed by the European Parliament in December 2003. The draft would have led to a big pay rise for most members of the European Parliament, that would have seen euro-MPs from new member states in eastern Europe earn more than their prime ministers, although it would also reduce the expenses given to MEPs..
