Commentary feature. For the seventh time European voters have a chance in June 2009 to choose the European Parliament in direct elections. But turnout has fallen, from 63% in 1979 to a low of barely 45%. According to the latest Eurobarometer survey, only 34% said they were certain to cast their ballot in June 2009 – ranging from 82% in Greece, where voting is compulsory, to a miserable 17% in Poland and 22% in the UK. |
