Abstract:

This work is part of the Routledge series 'Europe and the Nation State', which explores the relationship between the nation state and European integration in the context of the EU and its Member States. It looks at four distinct types of public policy to show the role of the Greek state in the EU policy process and how Greek public policy is effectively formulated in the EU.

The book is organised over nine chapters grouped in five parts. The first part offers an introduction to the patterns of EU membership. Part two examines distributive and redistributive policies and looks at the implementation of the CAP and the role of EC/EU regional policy in Greece. In the third part, the contributors consider regulative policies and choose the area of environmental protection to highlight the EU's impact upon Greek public policy in this area. Another writer offers social regulation and the importance of national courts and the emergence of consensus-based institutions. Foreign policy and EMU are the focus of part four, where the writers explore the changing nature of EU membership from one of constraint to one of opportunity for modernisation of national policies. Epilogue is the title given to part five, which draws on earlier chapters and analyses the evolution of Greek public attitudes to identify areas of strengths and weaknesses and to highlight the differences experienced across sectors.

The work will interest scholars and students of European Union studies and European integration.
