Although the Union's economy has been depressed by sagging business sentiment, the OECD believes that “high levels of consumer confidence and the expected gradual recovery in export markets” should ensure a 2&percent; growth rate this year and 2.5&percent; in 2000. At the same time, a downturn in consumer and investment spending in the US should produce growth of 3.5&percent; this year and 2&percent; in 2000, said the Paris-based agency. |
