‘Guantanamo of the East’: Ukraine Locks Up Refugees at EU’s Behest

Most migrants reach Europe through Italy or Greece and many of them die on the way. Several European leaders and officials have demanded better protection for refugees on Europe's southern border and the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, describes the route across the Mediterranean as the world's deadliest.

However, that is not the only route used by immigrants trying to reach the European continent. Spiegel Online International published a feature describing refugee centers in Ukraine, funded by the European Union.
