Green MEP Bart Staes is calling for the Commission's consumer protection watchdogs to intervene to restrict the inclusion of caffeine in drinks.

The Belgian MEP says that according to research from John Hopkins University in the US, caffeine is added to soft drinks because of its addictive properties and not, as manufacturers claim, to enhance flavour.

Anti-caffeine rules are unlikely to ever see the light of day, however, because asking European officials to draw up any proposal without allowing for frequent visits to the EU institutions' in-house cafés for an espresso would be totally unrealistic.
