The UK bank Abbey National is poised to become part of Spain's largest bank, Santander Central Hispano. The European Commission has cleared the deal and HBOS has abandoned plans for a counter-bid. If the merger goes ahead it will be the biggest European cross-border banking deal, and may lead to further transactions. It will have been completed in only three months. |
