Date: 27/05/1999 By THE dominant feelings at the end of our century are disquiet and, above all, a burgeoning desire to change our societies. Fostering men and women's interests without discrimination; democracy, transparency and citizenship; individuals' rights, anti-racism; the need to respect the balance of nature and achieve sustainable development; peaceful, fair international relations based on solidarity - these are the values which are gaining ground. The revival of a spirit of dissent and renewed determination to bring about change are reflected in social attitudes. It is in that spirit that our group works to bring out a social and ecological Europe, a more democratic Europe, a Europe of solidarity and peace. Priority must be given to full employment, training and healthy growth which seeks to safeguard living conditions and the balance of nature. This will mean a revision of the stability pact and the European Central Bank's tasks, taxation of speculative capital movements and a substantial reduction in working hours with no loss of salary. Moves to bring EU decision-making closer to the citizens are vital. Improved cooperation is needed rather than 'economic war', disarmament rather than militarisation. Racism, xenophobia and violent nationalisms must be more firmly combated. |
