Date: 30/05/1996 If the UK government wants any help eradicating BSE, Germany's Agriculture Minister Jochen Borchert is the man for the job. Not only has Borchert been the most outspoken opponent of any concessions to the UK over the beef ban, but he and his number two Franz-Josef Feiter are passionate hunters. They raised a few eyebrows and generated some headlines of their own by taking two trips to Spain in German air force planes to hunt wild game, in the midst of a German fuss about the need to control excessive public spending. Perhaps their killer instincts could be redirected towards the UK's potentially infected cattle herds if John Major needs help conducting the kind of large-scale cull that Borchert is pressing for. |
