Václav Havel, playwright, philosopher and one-time President of the Czech Republic, died aged 75 on the 18 December 2011. He played not just a central role in the 1989 overthrow of communism in Czechoslovakia but in his country’s national life for years afterwards. He remained what he had always been: a dissident.
