Hope for a fresh settlement in Cyprus

Preview and reports of meeting held in Geneva starting on the 9 January 2017 between leaders of the Greek and Turkish communities in Cyprus under the auspices of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Mr. Espen Barth Eide.

The two sides have been working with the UN towards a settlement of the dispute that has divided the two communities for over five decades and seen the island physically divided since 1974.

The Foreign Ministers of Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, as guarantor nations of the independence of Cyprus, took part in the talks on the 12 January 2017. Also attending on that day were the new UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
